Ukraïner Chernivtsi & Rivne, City Portraits

through the voices of their local cultural figures

As part of Ukraïner’s project exploring everyday life across Ukraine, we traveled to Rivne and Chernivtsi to meet people who shape their local culture. In Rivne, we spoke with Yuri Zhuravel — frontman of Ot Vinta and visual artist — and writer Olexandr Irvanets. In Chernivtsi, we met Sasha Boole, a folk singer and songwriter, and Marina Libanova, owner of the city’s most beloved bookshop.

These stories offered a glimpse into the creative spirit and community life of each city.

Ukraïner — USAID

Ukraine's resilience during war

For USAID, I documented stories of communities supporting those displaced by war — from a breakdance group offering refuge, to a journalist network amplifying voices, to a hairdresser who built shelters and aid systems from the ground up. A look into grassroots impact and everyday resilience.

My personal documentary projects

about Ukrainians during war

In the first months of the full-scale invasion, I documented how ordinary people across Ukraine adapted and resisted: from building new bridges where the old ones were bombed, to weaving camouflage nets and making Molotov cocktails in backyards. I captured families sheltering in corridors during air raids, schools transformed into shelters for displaced people, and communities coming together to care, protect, and rebuild. This project is my way of preserving the resilience and humanity that emerged in the face of war.

Testimonials

“I had the opportunity to work with Lina as a photo editor on several media projects. She always approached each shoot with great responsibility and attention to detail, clearly following editorial guidelines while also bringing in her own artistic vision. Working with her was a pleasure, and I look forward to future collaborations”
